What's New in v0.40: Lanes Meets Your Stack

v0.40 is about reach: pulling work in from where you track it, pushing you out to where you write code.

Wire Linear up once and any issue becomes a Lanes draft with one click, fully populated. Open the working folder in VS Code, Cursor, Zed, or six other editors with another click. Under the hood, the side panel got a popover for working folder and changes, worktrees gained a safety net before destructive moves, and session state finally tracks what's actually happening.

Bring Linear issues in with one click

Configure Linear once and every issue gets an Open in new entry (⌘⌥.) in its coding-tool menu that lands the issue in your Lanes backlog fully populated: title, description, identifier, and a link back. The board treats it like any other Lanes issue from there, ready for a session.

To wire it up, open Linear's Settings → Preferences → Coding tools (or hit Configure coding tools… from any issue), pick Custom link, and paste this into the URL field:

Code
lanes://new?prompt={{prompt}}

Open in the editor of your choice

The working folder now has an Open in menu with VS Code, Cursor, Zed, the JetBrains suite, Sublime, Xcode, Windsurf, and Fleet. Lanes detects which ones you have installed and only shows those.

The shape we kept hearing: let the agent run in Lanes, but when you need to take the wheel, your IDE should be one click away on the exact folder. No path copying, no terminal hop. The split between agent-driven and hand-driven work shouldn't cost you a window.

A clearer view of the working folder and changes

The side panel got rebuilt around a popover. The working folder tree and the changes view used to share a crowded column with everything else on an issue. Now they live in a focused popover that opens where you need it and gets out of the way when you don't.

Click into Changes and you get the full file tree and side-by-side diff in the same space, instead of a separate window. Less hunting, fewer modals.

The file explorer also gained a right-click menu, so the obvious actions on a file (open it, reveal it, copy its path) are right where your hand expects them.

Worktrees and sessions that hold the line

Worktrees got a safeguard. Destructive operations now route through a confirmation dialog with a clear summary of what's about to happen. The selector, the git-changes view inside a worktree, and the creation path all got separate fixes too, so the rough edges that showed up when you started leaning on worktrees should be gone.

Session state is the other half of the same story. Lanes now reads "awaiting input" and "session stopped" more reliably, which means the bell, the status, and the action buttons agree on reality. The cases where a session looked busy after it was actually idle, or quiet when it was waiting on you, are addressed.

Other improvements

  • ⌘E is the new shortcut for Remove task (was ⌘⌫), so backspace stays usable in inputs.
  • Start Split Button lets you pick how a session kicks off, planning or implementation, up front.
  • List virtualization keeps long boards smooth.
  • Idle detection was rewritten so the agent stops being flagged busy when it's actually waiting on you.
  • Panel alignment pass across the app to tidy dimensions, gaps, and icon spacing.
  • Min-width on the side panel, ⌘Q on the login page, macOS app icon, git push, and delayed-injection fixes round out the patch run.
